| These engravings of schematic anthropomorphic figures are composed of irregular grooves and curves. The main vertical line that indicates the body extends down between the legs and may represent a penis. This line also extends up to represent the head although sometimes this can be large and rotund or barely indicated by a circle. Sometimes a beak/muzzell can be discerned on the head which could be representative of a mask or a mythological character. Some figures have raised arms or legs in various combinations, such as folded, similar to 'Orante' figures of the Valcamonica and Valtellina regions of the Neolithic and early Bronze Age. These stances are suggestive of dance or worship. The figures are sometimes accompanied by "shovels", similar to the unusual signs in Valcamonica. The carving of these figures on the walls of domus suggests that the figures could represent the dead (this could also be the case for the unusual seated figures), their spirit or an accompanying divinity in the world of the dead. |
