Description:Keywords
Engraving. Precolumbian rock art. Ballereau & Niemeyer (1996) describe this as a mask like motif. Masks such as these are found throughout the Norte Chico area of Chile. Although the masks have many features in common, they are not identical. The style characteristically has a clear outline, symmetrical design, angular shape with linear decoration, and geometrical form. The spikes at the top of this rectangle could indicate hair. However, this image does not have any immediately recognisable anatomical features, and it may not be a mask. Instead it could be the plan of a territory or house, an ideogram, or a patterned shield.
