Went for a great wee overnight adventure in the Lammermuir hills at the weekend with Jay and Markus (from bikepackingscotland.com). We were planning on heading further afield, but a broken down van scuppered that idea. Instead we headed south, riding from my front door.
Soon enough we were out in the countryside where we found ourselves on a once nice path, now destroyed by tree cutting machinery. The mud built up on my bike eventually causing the rear dérailleur to snap off. After a struggle with a chain breaker, we shortened the chain and made my bike effectively into a single-speed. I was unsure as to whether I should carry on, or head back, but decided to keep going for the moment. I'm glad I did. 150km later we'd explored new routes over the hills, enjoyed a clear and star filled night sky, and had a beautiful cycle back along the coast to Edinburgh, into the sunset.
